Advertising can be a powerful tool for visibility, credibility, and sales—but only if it’s done right. All too often, businesses invest time, energy, and budget into ads that look the part but don’t perform. And when that happens, it’s easy to blame the platform or the audience when the real issue could be the design, the message, or the delivery.
In this blog, we’re diving into what makes an advert ‘work’—whether it’s online, in print, on social, or out in the real world.
This might sound counterintuitive, but the best ads don’t talk about the business. They talk to the customer.
If your advert is full of internal language, technical jargon, or company-focused features, chances are it’s not connecting. Customers want to know how your product or service helps ‘them'—what problem it solves, how it makes their life easier, or what result they can expect.
Quick fix: Lead with a benefit. Not a logo.
We all love a clever tagline—but not at the expense of clarity. An ad that looks slick but leaves people confused isn’t effective.
You have about 3 seconds (sometimes less) to grab attention.
That means:
Think less is more. One message per ad. Don’t try to say everything—just the thing that matters most.
Not every ad works on every platform. That full-page print ad might look great in a magazine but wouldn’t translate well to a social post or an A5 flyer.
Before you design anything, ask:
Where will it be seen? Who is the audience? What do you want them to ‘do’ next?
Digital ads need bold visuals and minimal text.
Print ads need structure and space.
Social ads need to stop the scroll.
Signage needs to be read from a distance—quickly.

We see this all the time: businesses putting out ads that don’t match the rest of their visual identity. Maybe the fonts are off, the colours clash, or the tone of voice feels “off-brand.”
Inconsistent branding weakens trust. It makes your business feel scattered or amateur, even if your services are top-notch.
‘Consistency builds confidence’. Your ads should feel like part of your brand family, not distant cousins.
Design gets the attention. Strategy gets the results.
At Spi-des-ign, we never design ads in isolation.
We ask:
Who are you targeting? What’s your objective? Where will the ad live? What outcome are you measuring?
If your advertising doesn’t have a purpose, it’s just noise.
Great advertising doesn’t happen by accident. It’s thoughtful, clear, targeted, and designed to convert. Whether you’re running a summer campaign or launching a new product, investing in ads that work smarter (not just harder) can make all the difference.
